Early Life

On February 26, 1992, Demet Özdemir came into the world in İzmit. She was the youngest of three, with an older sister, Derya, and a brother, Volkan. Their grandmother had earlier moved from Bulgaria, adding another layer to the family’s story.

When her parents’ marriage ended, Demet left İzmit behind and settled in Istanbul together with her mother and sister. That move, she has said, shaped much of who she became. Her connection with her father was distant for years. She later explained: “We didn’t see each other for a long time, but recently we came together again. I never thought he hated us—he’s just stubborn.”

Dance came first. She had been dancing since she was a child—training hard, performing whenever she had the chance, and loving every moment of it. For her it was never just a pastime. Even today she occasionally returns to the stage for her fans. Later, between 2011 and 2013, she also studied acting at Studio Actors, joining their workshops to build her craft.

Career

Her early professional life was in dance. She joined the group that performed with Bengü Erden at concerts and later became part of Ephesus Girls. Music fans might also remember her from videos—Mustafa Sandal’s Ateş Et ve Unut or Bengü’s Hodri Meydan.

Acting arrived soon after. In 2013 she played Aylin in Sana Bir Sır Vereceğim (I’ll Tell You a Secret) on FOX, a series that continued into 2014. That was her first real step on television. Only a year later she broke through in Çilek Kokusu (Strawberry Smell), a summer romantic comedy on Star TV.

For a while she was linked to comedy roles. Her career took a different turn with Doğduğun Ev Kaderindir (My Home My Destiny), adapted from a novel by psychologist Gülseren Budayıcıoğlu. It showed she could handle drama with the same ease.

Another highlight followed with Erkenci Kuş (Daydreamer). Her role as Sanem won her the Best Actress prize at the Murex D’or Awards and gave her an international audience.

Today, Demet is widely seen as one of the central faces of Disney+ in Turkey. At the same time, she remains active on Turkish television.

Personal Life

The press has followed her personal life closely. Back in 2015 she was romantically involved with her Çilek Kokusu co-star Yusuf Çim. Their time together was stormy, full of breakups and reconciliations, until it ended in 2016.

In 2018 she had a short-lived relationship with actor Seçkin Özdemir, which came to an end after just a few months. Over the years Demet also had short relationships outside the industry, each ending without conflict.

By 2020 her name was linked with singer and actor Oğuzhan Koç. After a trip to Paris in late 2021 the two separated, though not for long. Koç made determined efforts to reconcile, and within weeks they reconciled. On February 14, 2022—Valentine’s Day—he proposed. Their wedding took place on August 28 that same year at the Six Senses Kocataş Mansions Hotel in Istanbul.

It did not last. Eight months later Demet announced the separation on her social media accounts. By May 2023 the divorce was complete, settled by mutual agreement.
